Disconnection

Disconnecting the Google Account in GTM Assistant

The GTM Assistant Shopify app provides the flexibility for merchants to disconnect their Google Account if needed. However, this feature should be used with caution, as it will erase all tags configured by the app in the associated Google Tag Manager (GTM) container. This page outlines how the feature works, when to use it, and important considerations.

What Happens When You Disconnect the Google Account?

Disconnecting your Google Account has the following effects:

  1. Tag Removal from GTM Container
All tags configured by the GTM Assistant app in the associated GTM container will be erased, including:

    • Google Analytics 4 (GA4) tags.

    • Any other tags configured through the app.

  2. Impact on Data Collection
Once tags are removed, no new data will be tracked or sent to the respective analytics platforms (e.g., GA4). However:

    • Previously collected data on the platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, Meta Pixel) will remain unaffected and accessible for reporting.

  3. Reconfiguration Required
After disconnecting the Google Account, merchants will need to reconnect the correct Google account and reconfigure all tags.

When Should You Use This Feature?

It is highly recommended to use the "Disconnect Google Account" feature only when absolutely necessary. Common scenarios include:

  1. Incorrect GTM Container Configuration
If the wrong GTM container was selected during the setup process and needs to be replaced with the correct one.

  2. Wrong Google Account or GTM Account
If the app was configured with an incorrect Google Account or GTM account and needs to be updated.

  3. Switching to a Different Google Account
When transitioning to a new Google Account for managing your store’s analytics and marketing setup.

Important Considerations

  1. Data Safety

    • Disconnecting your Google Account only removes the tags configured by the app in the GTM container.

    • Previously tracked data remains unaffected in your analytics platforms (e.g., GA4, Meta, or Twitter). You can still access historical reports.

  2. GA4 Tags
If Google Analytics 4 (GA4) tags are configured, disconnecting the Google Account will also remove these tags. This will stop GA4 tracking until the account and tags are reconnected.

  3. Caution with Usage
Since disconnecting the Google Account erases all tags, it is advised to use this feature sparingly and only when necessary.

  4. Reconnecting Tags
After disconnecting a tag, you can reconnect it at any time by entering the correct details. Individual tag disconnection does not affect the Google account or GTM container connection.

How to Disconnect the Google Account

To disconnect your Google Account from the GTM Assistant app:

  1. Open the GTM Assistant app in your Shopify admin panel.

  2. Locate the option to “Disconnect” link for the connected Google Account.

  3. Confirm the action by following the on-screen instructions.

Warning: Confirm that you want to proceed only if you are certain about the need to disconnect the account.

Reconnecting After Disconnection

If you’ve disconnected the Google Account and wish to reconnect:

  1. Go back to the GTM Assistant app and log in with the correct Google Account.
  2. Reconfigure your GTM container and tags.
  3. Set up Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and other tags as needed.
